I love to make homemade pizza, so I thought, why not the sauce too? Pizza sauce is not a consistent recipe at all! There are a million different ways to make it, and today I am sharing my homemade pizza sauce from tomato sauce recipe!
While doing research for this recipe, I found a lot of different sauce recipes. Some used all tomato paste with water, some were no-cook recipes using canned tomatoes, and some used no seasonings!
I tried a few variations and I liked the slow simmered pizza sauce from tomato sauce the best. I did use a little tomato paste for depth of flavor, but I found that an all tomato paste recipe was way to sweet and strong.
The best recipe I tried also used Parmesan cheese for extra savoriness. I didn’t think pizza sauce needed more cheese, because there is usually plenty on top of the pizza. Therefore, I used nutritional yeast to boost the flavor, and loved the results!
Variations to the Homemade Pizza Sauce from Tomato Sauce recipe:
- If you don’t stock nutritional yeast, you can omit it, or use grated Parmesan cheese. I simply didn’t think additional cheese was necessary in the a pizza sauce.
- Use triple the amount of fresh herbs for a stronger herb flavor. For example, make a tomato basil sauce using 1 TBS fresh basil
- Taste test the sauce half way through and increase sugar or salt as necessary.
- If you don’t have broth, use water and a pinch of salt.
- The recipe make enough for 3 Crispy Crust Pizza’s, or 1 1/2 hand tossed pizzas.
- 2 TBS olive oil or butter, or a combo
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp each: basil and oregano (dried)
- ½ tsp red pepper flake
- 15 oz can tomato sauce
- ⅓ cup vegetable broth (or broth of choice)
- 2 TBS each: nutritional yeast and tomato paste
- 1 TBS white sugar or honey
- Combine olive oil (or butter, if using) with garlic is a medium pot over medium heat. Saute until garlic just starts to turn golden. Mix in onion powder, basil, oregano, and red pepper flake. Let the seasonings toast for about 1 minute.
- Mix in tomato sauce, broth, nutritional yeast, tomato paste, and sugar or honey.
- Let this simmer for about 1 hour, partially covered stirring every 10 minutes.
