Homemade Refried Beans

These homemade refried beans are special because you can flavor them any way you like. Try this vegetarian recipe made with lots of garlic and fresh cumin!

Serves: 4½ cups
Ingredients
  • 1 lb pinto beans, soaked 15 hours, rinsed and drained
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 5 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 ½ TBS canola oil
  • 1 ½ TBS butter (or more canola oil to make vegan)
Instructions
  1. Simmer beans in water for 1 hour, partially covered.
  2. Start to mash and continue to cook without the lid until you reach your desired consistency, about 10 minutes.
  3. Stir in remaining ingredients. Taste and season accordingly.
